Academic Careers and Workplaces

My primary research interests include the structural and cultural dimensions of academic work; the career development, work experiences, and professional behavior of college and university faculty; and issues related to institutional change. My most recent work was designed to facilitate learning more about how faculty construct a sense of meaning and purpose in their lives, including through their professional pursuits. The 2012 Faculty Beliefs and Values Survey (see findings depiction) builds on my previous work in association with the 2004 and 2007 College Students' Beliefs and Values Surveys and the the UCLA Higher Education Research Institute's 2004 Triennial National Survey of College Faculty. Undergraduates & The Search for Meaning and Purpose

In 2002, Alexander Astin, Helen Astin, and I launched a multi-year program of research to examine how undergraduate students change during the college years and the role that college plays in facilitating the development of their spiritual and religious qualities. Funded by the John Templeton Foundation, the Spirituality in Higher Education project was the first national longitudinal study of students’ spiritual growth. The project was designed to enhance our understanding of how college students conceive of spirituality, the role it plays in their lives, and how colleges and universities can be more effective in facilitating students'  spiritual development. To learn more about this decade-long research endeavor, please visit our archival site for the project. Associated publications include:
